About the Author
Susan Blackmon has enjoyed reading historical novels all her life. With a talent for writing it was only natural for her to try her hand at creating one of her own. All that was missing was inspiration. An unexpected cruise ship detour to Key West and a few history tours later, Max and Abby’s story began. When Susan isn’t writing, she enjoys being with her family, hiking waterfalls, gardening, reading and scrapbooking.
An Echo of the Past:
This book came to be much in the same way the town of Key West came to exist. In 1818, John Whitehead found himself on an unexpected detour. The ship that rescued him from a shipwreck in the Bahamas made a stop at Key West and if you read the Author’s Notes of Salvaged Love you know how that led to the founding of the island. In similar fashion, I was on a cruise in 2005 planning to sail to Nassau, St. Thomas, and St. Maartin but due to continuing problems with the ship our true itinerary turned out to be the Bahamas and Key West. This would be my second visit to the island.
On my first visit, in December 2001, we took the Conch Train tour. This time we chose the Trolley tour. Apparently the second time around I was more keenly interested in the history of the island for it struck a chord in me. Next, we took a tour through the Shipwreck Historium and Museum and by the time I exited the building inspiration for Salvaged Love had truly struck. Once back on board the ship, I was taking notes, naming characters, and working on plot development. Max and Abby came to be. Their story took a back burner for several years before finally coming to fruition in 2012.
